Another European destination hot spot that I saw coming from a mile away… Mallorca! I had the extreme please of visiting this Balearic Island last summer and I can say with the utmost certainty that it lives up to the hype!
This is a unique island in my opinion, as each region differs both in landscape and overall “vibe.” I would classify Palma de Mallorca (city center) as the historical counterpoint of the island, there’s a stunning castle, cathedral, tons of walking tours and tourists galore. Night time is accompanied by quant little restaurants along the cobblestone walkways, and great little bars and tapas spots. There are outdoor vendors, music and plenty of gelato.
Palma Beach is adjacent to the city center and is a long stretch of beach area dotted with resorts, some larger all inclusives and some smaller boutique-style properties. This is where I stayed (HM Balanguera Beach), and while I loved the miles of boardwalk for bike riding purposes, this was definitely more of a casual side of the island. Lots of “quick eats,” beer and even bratwurst stands were located along this strip, which I found a bit odd.
Now onto my favorite parts of the island. Cala d’OR and Cala Figuera are both smaller regions on this island. Cala d’Or homes some of the most beautiful cave-like beaches that I’ve ever seen!! There are some larger properties here as well, but mostly rental homes and small B&B style stays. If you’re looking for jaw dropping beaches, this is the spot for you! Not too far from this beach area is Cala Figuera. Now this is more of a fishing village, but it just might be the most charming place I’ve ever seen! It’s quaint, it’s romantic, it’s a world of it’s own! I’ve also had some of espresso of my life at a cafe overlooking this stunning port! I’d say if remote and laid back is your vacation vibe of choice, this area is an excellent destination!
It’s important to keep in mind that this is actually quite a big island, actually the largest of the Balearic Islands! And while transportation within Palma is pretty convenient, with local busses running all the way from Palma Beach right to the city center it is pretty limited in other regions. That doesn’t mean exploring other parts is complete impossible. I personally hired an awesome taxi driver who took us to all of the destinations on our list. (Reach out of this recommendation). However, this type of transport can get pricy if you’re doing over the course of multiple days. So, my advice here is to do your research on the island and decide with side makes sense for you and your desired type of travel.
Once you’ve decided, sit back, and get ready to experience the joys of Mallorca!
